Decorating Around the TV

.
Rene at Cottage and Vine is hosting a fun link party today.  She is asking her readers where they have their TV.  Because I am SNOWED IN today (17" so far!!!) I thought I would link up a post.

.
My TV is above my fireplace.  I had my builder recesses a place for it during construction.  As much as I like having the TV there, it does cause a few challenges as far as decorating around it.

Here are a few photos of how I've decorated my mantle in different seasons.

Where is your TV?  Do you have a hard time fitting it in?  Head on over to Rene's party to see what others have linked up.

  1. We just purchased a new television in honor of the Super Bowl and Stephen's love for the Steelers. I would love to eventually hang it above our fireplace, only right now in our apt, that doesn't work...some day! I love your mantel! I really love the glass jars that you have there - where are they from? I hope you're enjoying your snow day :) - too bad we don't live close together, I'd love to get into some craft trouble during this crazy snow storm! Hope you're staying warm!

  2. Great post! We just moved and our tv was over the fireplace at our last home. It's can be a struggle to find ideas that will work and not obstruct the tv (my husband didn't like anything on the mantel in case it could possibly hinder his tv watching) Great blog!

  3. I love it. You have done a great job surrounding it with items to it's not taking over the room!

  4. Love what you have done. My TV isn't over the fireplace but my mantle drives me crazy - it is about 1 1/2 feet deep, as the gas fireplace isn't recessed to the outside - I just don't know what to put on there!

But I am making a photo gallery with our TV as part of it upstairs in our games room!

  6. Your mantel always looks lovely, Alissa. Our TV was over our fireplace in our previous house. Now it hangs on the wall with a cabinet underneath it. The mantel in our current house is about 5 feet up from the floor, so there isn't enough room above it for a TV.

  7. We live in an apartment so our t.v. is extra difficult. We hung it with a wall mount above our fireplace (which is in the corner) but it is really hard to decorate around it because it sticks out over the mantel. It has been the bane of my existence for the past 2 years! But, I'm slowly getting it to look the way I want it to.

  8. Our previous home had the tv above the fireplace. This time we have it in an armoire off to the side of the fireplace since the wall over the mantel is shaped a little funny so you can't really mount anything big and flat on it. I have a huge tin star there that helps to disguise the strange wall. :)

  9. Stopping by from Rene's. I've always wondered how people accessorize around a mantel TV. Everyone I know just has the TV up there and it's kind of plain looking. I LOVE how you incorporate accessories with each season and make it interesting without being "too much." :)

  10. I'm not a big fan of the tv over the mantel trend. I know everyone does it, but it's too high for best viewing. I always end up with a crick in my neck! We have ours hanging on the wall (at 42" high) with a low piece of furniture beneath it. I don't really decorate around my tv. Your mantel is lovely though in all the seasons.

  11. I love how you have decorated your mantle around your TV! We are in the process of getting our living room finished and we have a fireplace on an angled wall and are planning to place our TV over it. We are going to redo our hearth and mantle as well. I am sending this blog to my husband as one of our inspirations. We had planned to use Carrara marble for our hearth and surround but I so love the look of your tile I may look to that instead. Great job!

  13. Alissa, thank you for sharing your tv with us all. I'm certain that it provided some much needed inspiration for many design dilemmas out there. It was nice to see how you change the decor throughout the seasons. Stay warm.

  14. I am in love with the tiling around your fire place. Did you do it yourself? I have it on my to do list for my fireplace (and my kitchen), but was curious to know how easy it was to install (if you did it). It's sooo pretty!

  16. I love the seashells decor around it. It guides my imagination into summer beaches plus the hues of blue compliments it. Huh, i wish for the time to be bright sunny.

  17. We saw on the television just how much snow you have had in the last twenty four hours, amazing!
Your TV does look good where it is but as you say it does make decorating your mantelpiece challenging, a challenge you seem up to every time. Your ideas often give me inspiration :)

  18. When we built our home the idea of tv's over the fireplace was still new and I wasn't ready to go for it. It does seem like it would present a real challenge. You've done a nice job working around yours.
